The Roman Colosseum

When in Rome, this is probably the next most iconic attraction next to the Vatican. The Colosseum is an amphitheatre built around 70-80 AD. It is made of concrete and sand and can hold up to 80,000 spectators. It’s most known use is for gladiator fights and public spectacles.

Can you imagine how gladiators risked their lives to entertain the Roman audience? I can’t but I guess their courage behind all these gruesome fights with other gladiators, criminals, and wild animals proved that they were worthy of respect and approval from the public. It is worth it? We can never tell at this point but I’m glad that we can put this behind and that this is all part of our history now.

When you go, it is best if you purchase a Roma Pass so you don’t have to fall in line when you get there. They can be pretty long especially during the peak season. You can buy the Roma Pass in visitor centers or even at the Fiumicino Airport. It gives you free access to the Colosseum and several others museums around the city, free transportation, and discounts to events and services.
