rome || the roman forum and ruins
The Roman Forum (also known as Forum Magnum) is a large plaza found in the center of Rome. It was the center of Ancient Roman public life where most people would meet for public speeches, gladiator fights, processions, elections, criminal trials and important public affairs. Today, you can find architectural and archaeological ruins and excavations of the oldest structures in the ancient city of Rome. There are several shrines, government offices, temples, statues and memorials all over the place. When we went, the visit took up most of our afternoon coming from the Colosseum in the morning.
Plan to spend half a day to visit the site or even a full day if you want to pace out your walk in between sites. There are lots of tall umbrella pine trees and orange trees as well, providing lots of shade if you want to take rest stops. If you climb to Palatine Hill, you will see a magnificent view of the ruins and from there let your imagination run wild. From our visit, It was fascinating to picture what the core of the ancient city was like from the empire under Augustus in 31BC and how for nearly 500 years, how Rome ruled most of the world.
